COVID -19 PANDEMIC – Mask Distribution

1. Bring affordable healthcare and health information to the community,

2. Create awareness on Covid-19 spread, signs and symptoms and prevention.

Rays of Care Kenya (ROCK) held its first major covid-19 awareness campaign and training in Amboseli, it was a huge success.

ROCK is planning to have another campaign in Kitengela and Soy, Aligula village in the month August 2021. The actual dates will be communicated. The main objective of Covid -19 campaigns is to:

3. Train the community of making of local detergents like soap for economical and home use.

Masks distribution
Distribution of masks after training to the community. Most of them still believe that there is no Coronavirus, but we made them understand that it is better to keep safe than sorry.

We had both cloth mask and surgical masks.

Challenges

The unpredictable journey to remote villages; impassable roads especially when using a small car, but we managed.

We travelled few staff because of Covid-19 restrictions.

We could not do the free medical camp due to time frame and to reduce our exposure during this Covid-19 season.

We had limited funds that could only purchase the most important items as we went to do a baseline survey.

The number of people was overwhelming we could not give masks to all. We only had 200 masks because of financial constraint.

The Maasai in this particular village do not cultivate crops which forced us to carry our own food for the day unlike other areas where they offer meals.

Language barrier, most of the team members had to learn the language as much as possible.

The women were many during the training but unfortunately, they don’t have confidence like the men and know very little Swahili.

Recommendations

There is need to find means of cultivating farm produce so as to improve on community health and immunity.

The government and NGOs have done a commendable job on drilling water, which is quite sweet and fresh from the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro, but they need to drill more.

The area needs to be separated between the wild animals, domestic animals and the farming area. This will change the ecosystem of the place.

There is need to build more health centers and deploy more medical personnel to protect the health of the people. Most of the time they have traditional birth attendants whom we gave gloves to use.

More training and awareness on Covid-19 is needed, or else this is disaster in awaiting.

The Team

Our team is dynamic in skills hence we are an all round with different departments and expertise e.g. in Health and Wellness we have healthcare professionals, social workers, and teachers who help in day today activities. Our team of volunteers believe in service to mankind is service to God so they do not expect to be paid but appreciated, they are dedicated and motivated to the service they give to the less fortunate in the society.

They sacrifice their time and resource to make sure we reach as many people in need as possible. They travel from different parts of the country.

We are a Chosen Generation
